A significant amount of engagement and consultation with stakeholders in and around the Central Bletchley area has taken place in recent years as part of the preparation of a number of plans and projects, including the Prospectus, Plan:MK and Town Deal. The responses to those consultation exercises already provide a good deal of understanding and insight into the key challenges and opportunities of the area.

All of the information that has been collected from previous engagement is important and will be used to inform the content of the Central Bletchley Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

Your views are still needed as we haven’t heard from everyone and a lot has changed over the last 18 months that is likely to affect how we travel, shop and use our town centres in the future. We will also use this website to share with you specific thoughts and ideas, ask questions that will inform how the SPD should be prepared, and also to consult on the SPD as it emerges in draft form.

Below are some of the initial thoughts and ideas generated through previous engagement. This is only a summary of some of the messages, and many individual responses pick up other points of interest and detail.

Strengths
  • ‘Small town’ feel – friendly and self contained, providing something different from Central Milton Keynes (CMK), and a place where people like to shop locally with a number of independent shops and businesses.
  • Queensway – wide pavements, attractive, tree-lined shopping area.
  • A good range of local facilities – library, shops, health services, nursery.
  • Convenience of local amenities, green spaces, rail links to MK, Bedford and London, broadband and AI deliveries.
  • The history of Bletchley Park on the doorstep.
  • The green open spaces, the trees, the plentiful play parks.
Weaknesses
  • Poor quality of public realm (Bletchley especially) – littering, poorly maintained roads and parking areas - feels unsafe and unwelcoming.
  • Empty buildings - eg the Co-op building in Bletchley – reduce the attractiveness of the area.
  • Lack of diversity in the retail offer and a lack of healthy food options.
  • The Brunel Centre building closes off views to Queensway from the railway station to the west.
  • Need for better redways and more cycling lanes. Dangerous to cycle round the area at present.
  • Not enough parking.
  • Poor bus connectivity.
  • Improve access to the railway station - an east facing station with a foot bridge to the bus station is so important. Look at Saxon Street as the dual carriageway limits pedestrian and cycle access east-west.
Opportunities
  • Invest in Bletchley town centre to improve the quality of the environment; create a space for community events and a regular market; redevelop vacant and underused buildings.
  • Address car parking issues.
  • Improve signage in Bletchley (especially to public conveniences).
  • Need to strengthen the connection between Queensway and the area to the west.
  • Improved access to redways network.
  • Invest in culture & heritage to nurture the community and celebrate the area’s distinctive heritage
